"When I was in seventh grade, I was home-schooled for the second half of my seventh grade year and eighth grade year because I was really made the target of by a lot of students, and I was having my locker vandalized and my PE clothes stolen and had horrible things written on it, and my mom and my dad finally got sick of it and just home-schooled me for the rest of junior high. But then I went back to high school, and I was thrown back into the world of public schooling."

“Did you face anything like the bullying that your character does in Glee?”

As a kid, were you bullied?
“Oh, every day, yeah. I mean, I kind of sound like I’ve been sucking on helium all day, so I was teased about that a lot. And just because - I was very theatrical, myself, growing up. And I’m from a very small, conservative town so that didn’t really… didn’t work out.”

Is there anything you can say to kids that are maybe getting bullied? How did you get through it?
“I think I just focused on what I wanted to do and never let anything upset me. I just - full steam ahead, and just focused on what I wanted to do later.”

"I know how hard it is. It can be really traumatic sometimes – I was bullied myself in high school. I know this is a cliche, but it really does get better. You might feel alone, but remember there’s always others like you. Just look at West Hollywood or San Francisco where being gay is completely accepted."

Do you ever hear from any of these kids that you went to school with?
I do, but always like the jackasses, that like, were like mean and cruel, like they were always like ‘Oh, remember how we had such a great time’, and I’m always like ‘No! When you stuck that tampon on my back in homeroom that was not fun for me!’
